Christmas Carol Service 2019

The Carol Service which was led by Year 5, on the last day of term, was a truly memorable event. There was so much talent on display as the class performed the story of ‘The Little Match Girl’s Christmas’ and linked together all the elements of the service-the outstanding performances by the band, choir and woodwind group, the prayers and the presentation of the posada to the bishop.

Experience Christmas

The Year Two to Year Six children have taken part in a number of hands-on and reflective activities, in order to learn all about Christmas. They have learnt about why Jesus was a gift and also how they can prepare their hearts for Christmas, during Advent, by forgiving others and saying sorry for any wrongdoings. They also learnt how to overcome their fears and have confidence, when they face any challenges, understanding that God would be with them, just like he was with Mary when she received the announcement from an angel. The children were left with the question, after listening to the words of the poet Christina Rossetti, how could they give their heart to others and carry on Jesus’ work through their actions’.

Chester Trip

Year 4 had a fantastic trip to the Grosvenor Musuem in Chester. We enjoyed learning all about life in Roman times and getting to experience being members of the Roman army!

DT – Levers and Linkages

Year 3 have been busy using levers and linkages to make a hand wave, and a dragon move.

Will they be able to use their skills to design and make a prehistoric animal with moving parts?

Year Six Eucharist July 2019

Year Six assisted Bishop Mark to hold their final Eucharist at St Mary’s. The singing was beautiful; the prayers heartfelt and the readings clear and meaningful. We want to say a special ‘thank-you’ to the Bishop for taking the time to share in this important event.

Experience Pentecost

The Year Two to Year Six children have taken part in a number of exciting and thought provoking activities, in order to learn all about Pentecost. They have learnt all about the value of waiting patiently for things, working together as a team and being brave in difficult situations.  They know how the word and love of God started small and is now followed across the world. The children were left with the question, how can you show God’s love through your actions?

Shaw market debate

Children had a great time participating in a debate as part of learning about the British values – individual liberty and democracy. We discussed whether Shaw market should stay on the high street or move back to it’s old location behind the shops. There were strong arguments from both sides. After a heated debate, a vote was taken. The result was the majority wanted the market to stay on the high street. Well done everyone for taking part!

Assembly

We’re so proud of all of our amazing Year 4s for their incredible performance in their class assembly. Children clearly delivered key messages on the importance of respect.

Well done Year 4!

Biscuit Making

Year 4 have had a very busy morning creating biscuits to sell tomorrow. The money raised will go to charity. There were many exciting combinations, like chocolate and cherry and banana and cinnamon! They worked well as a team.

KS2 Sports Day

KS2 enjoyed an exciting Sports Day by taking part in a range of fun activities.  The extremely hot weather did not affect the children’s performances as they competed against each other and collected points for their colour team.  The event was a huge success!

Hindu Temple Visit

Year 4 enjoyed a wonderful trip to the Hindu temple. We learnt lots about the Hindu faith. During our visit we observed the ceremony arti, looked at models of gods and goddess and the heard the stories behind them and also got to try some prasad! Thank you very much to the volunteers at the Hindu temple for allowing us to visit.

Spanish Afternoon

Year 4 had a great time finishing off our Spain topic with a Spanish afternoon. We enjoyed trying some Spanish food, listening to Spanish music, creating some artwork inspired by the Spanish artist Gaudi and had a go at Flamenco dancing.

Easter Egg Competition 2018

Congratulations to all those who entered this years Easter Egg Competition. All entries were of a very high standard and were really imaginative. We were so impressed by your creations! There were lots of lovely comments made by all those who viewed them.

Experience Easter

The children had an exciting and informative visit, across to St Mary’s Church, to participate in our ‘Experience Easter’ event.  There were various interactive stations, situated around the church, to enable the children to experience the events of holy week and reflect upon them.  They took part in a number of activities, from sampling the bread and wine at the Last Supper, hanging their worries and fears on the tree in the Garden of Gethsemane, and writing their hopes and dreams on stones to place at the foot of the cross. Lots of interesting and in-depth questioning took place, to gain a deeper understanding of our Christian values, and how we can be the children of God, carrying on what we have learnt to improve the lives of others.

Manchester Royal Infirmary

St Mary’s CE Primary School and Manchester Royal Infirmary:

A very special project ……

The Year 6 pupils of St Mary’s School have been invited to work on a very special project. The project has been brought to us by one of the parents of an ex pupil, Mrs Shipton.

Mrs Shipton works in the Palliative Care at the Manchester Royal Infirmary Hospital and began a project to create a room for relatives of very poorly patients. The aim was to make this room as relaxing and calming as possible and to this end our pupils undertook some art work incorporating the trusts symbol of a butterfly. Mr Hugh Templeton, an artist, worked alongside Year 6 to create the fantastic images you see below.

On the 6th Dec 2017 pupil and staff representatives were invited to the Grand Opening of the relatives’ room were Kathy Cowell OBE – Chair of MFT. Invited our two school councilors Katie and Alfie to cut the ribbon and officially open the Butterfly Room.

This has been an amazing opportunity for our pupils and the school to be involved in and we feel privileged to have been a part of something that could really make a difference to patients and their families.

Treasure Trail

Treasure Trail Project

untitledTen local primary schools commissioned a national company (North by Northwest Limited, a Treasure Trails Gold partner), to work with pupils to produce 2 professional treasure trails that have a ‘spy’ theme

Treasure Trails are an imaginative and fun way to explore the local area. They are aimed at getting families outside together exploring and learning in a healthy and entertaining way. Each trail consists of an easy to follow route to walk along, whilst solving a set of mathematical clues along the way, to enable a participant to complete a final mission.

Enterprise Day

On Wednesday 8th February, ten pupils (Lucy Cockayne, Luca Hough, Heather Salway, Brandon Hough, Becky Kirk, Max Forsyth, Eliza Thorpe, Thomas Wood, Chelsea Bradley and Alexander Malesev-Walsh) entered a competition to design a new PE logo for all the primary schools in Royton and Shaw. They were put into groups with children from other schools, where they had to design a shirt, and work out a budget for designing and producing it.

Everyone had a great day working as a team and making new friends.

At the end of the day, the teams presented their designs to a panel of judges. As all the designs were excellent, it was decided that a part of each design would would make up the final logo.

Orangutan Day

The Orangutan Foundation has a ‘Vision for the Future’.  They believe,

“that by 2020, the decline of orangutans will be halted, and all remaining wild orangutan populations will be stable or expanding”.

p1010352

In Year 6 we believe that this is a worthy and worthwhile endeavour. So, as part of our Rainforests and Economic Awareness topics, we decided to raise funds in support of this cause.

We designed and made bandanas and sold biscuits and cakes to raise a magnificent total of £216 pounds which we donated to Orangutan Foundation.

Experience Church

The children were invited across to St Mary’s Church to participate in the ‘Experience Church’ event. There were various stations where they learnt about the importance of the different features of the church and how they are used. These included: The Font, Lectern, votive candle holders, Altar, door and stained glass windows. The children had great fun, creating their own stained glass candle holders, prayers and origami birds. They participated in many discussions to gain a deeper understanding into the many Christian values that are promoted. They learnt the importance of what we ourselves can bring to the Church and also take with us into our lives.
